Why Your Chronic Headache Might Not Be a Headache Problem

If you suffer from chronic, debilitating headaches, you know exactly how frustrating it can be to search for an answer. You have likely tried everything: magnesium supplements, various herbal remedies, dietary changes, and regular pain relief.
While these choices are great, they all have one thing in common: they are aimed at managing the symptom. But what if your headache has very little to do with your head?
I see this often in the office. A client comes in exhausted from years of managing headaches, assuming there is something wrong with their head or neck. However, when we look deeper, the body often points to a completely different priority.
Your Body's Priority List
Your body is incredibly intelligent and operates with its own built-in priority list for healing. When I use Nutrition Response Testing to assess a client with chronic headaches, the body does not always point to the head.
In many cases, it indicates that the liver or the thyroid needs support first.
The liver is your body primary filtration system. If it is not functioning as well as it should, toxins can accumulate. The liver is also responsible for clearing excess hormones. If it is sluggish or overwhelmed, hormones do not get cleared properly.
This can show up as hormonal headaches, food sensitivity headaches, tight neck/shoulders headaches or toxic headaches. The head is simply where you feel the problem but it is not where the problem started.
Addressing the Barriers to Healing
This is where the conventional approach often falls short. If you only take a supplement designed to fix a headache, you are ignoring the reason the headache is there in the first place. The headache is just the messenger that something is out of balance. It might settle for a while, but it will inevitably return because the underlying block to health has not been addressed.
In the office, we do not chase the headache. Instead, we find your unique underlying cause then the right support to handle it. We work to identify exactly what is affecting it whether that is a yeast overgrowth, a parasite, toxins or a hormonal imbalance.
These are what we call barriers to healing. When the liver (or the correct body area) gets the support it needs and the hidden stresses are removed, the headaches often clear on their own.
Moving Beyond Symptom Relief
That is the difference between symptom relief and true healing. Identifying and addressing the real barriers to healing allows your body to return to a state of balance naturally.
If you have been managing symptoms for a long time without getting to the bottom of things, it might be worth finding out what your body is actually asking for.
